Right Side Left Side

I was so fucking close in my thought processes yet so far......

------------------

WHY IN BRITAIN DO WE DRIVE ON THE LEFT?
About a quarter of the world drives on the left, and the countries that do are mostly old British colonies.
Japan also drive on the leftclick here for this explanation.

This strange quirk perplexes the rest of the world; however, there is a perfectly good reason.

Up to the late 1700's, everybody travelled on the left side of the road because it's the sensible option for feudal, violent societies of mostly right-handed people.

What does this International sign mean?

Lorries keep left
Lorry lane
No overtaking lorries

Jousting knights with their lances under their right arm naturally passed on each other's right, and if you passed a stranger on the road you walked on the left to ensure that your protective sword arm was between yourself and him.

Revolutionary France, however, overturned this practice as part of its sweeping social rethink. A change was carried out all over continental Europe by Napoleon. The reason it changed under Napoleon was because he was left handed his armies had to march on the right so he could keep his sword arm between him and any opponent.

From then on, any part of the world which was at some time part of the British Empire was thus left hand and any part colonised by the French was right hand.

In America, the French colonised the southern states (Louisiana for instance) and the Canadian east coast (Quebec). The Dutch colonised New York (or New Amsterdam). The Spanish and Portugese colonised the southern Americas. So The British were a minority in shaping the 'traffic'.

The drive-on-the-right policy was adopted by the USA, which was anxious to cast off all remaining links with its British colonial past

Once America drove on the right, left-side driving was ultimately doomed. If you wanted a good reliable vehicle, you bought American, for a period they only manufactured right-hand-drive cars.

From then on many countries changed out of necessity.

Today, the EC would like Britain to fall into line with the rest of Europe, but this is no longer possible. It would cost billions of pounds to change everything round.
The last European country to convert to driving on the right was Sweden in 1967. While everyone was getting used to the new system, they paid more attention and took more care, resulting in a reduction of the number of road accident casualties.

wow..this is really interesting. I have wondered about it. Thanks for the info.

What is really fun, for an American, is to ride in the front seat of the top deck of a british bus. Sways from side to side and books around on left side so it's quite a thrill.

I think a Lorrie is thier word for a bus. So, busses keep left, bus lane and no passing busses.

Reaz ~ Thanks for stopping by and checking my place out.

Celti~ Nice to see you are still about even though I am a bastard at posting lately.

I had always thought that the Right Side way of walking was due to the fact that it would be more difficult to pull a sword if you were walking on the left. You would be pulling your sword into the other person in the situation that both persons were on their left. I didnt take into account that they would also be drawing their blades into a wall or some object that could hinder their progress as well. I also never knew that places like England and Australia still walked to the left and not the right. I am gonna be really fucked up if I ever visit LOL. Ohh wait no I am not I am a big enough guy I'll just give my go to hell look and walk however the fuck I want....=)

You know what pleased me most about that story? You KNEW that New York was once called New Amsterdam- if you had ever been in one of my U.S. History classes, you would get to pick from the 'Bag O Rewards'! It's so important to understand that different areas followed different practices depending on who colonized them...sorry, it must be time for school to start! But, Seeker, YOU RULE!! Btw- how much longer must I stay in time out? I feel I've paid my debt to society and been reformed.

Hmm, thats pretty extensive history about right hand and left hand drives. Reminds me of some stuff that Dan Brown would write :)

Very historical and very informative. Another Dan Brown in the making? ;)

You would still get a treat because you had the sense to look up information you didn't know and the integrity to admit that the work wasn't yours! Thanks for moving me out of the penalty box- I'll try to control myself in the future... TRY!!!

Hifzur~ Thanks for coming to visit please feel free to stop by as your time permits.

Tsarina~ Plaigerism is not my forte. I get a treat thats cool, I'll take the naked lady playing cards. My name is Seeker after all darlin' so with that being said is it that odd? Actually it is because I was researching something else entirely when I came upon this nugget. I love it when I analyze things in my mind come to a conclusion and I find I am oh so close to being correct, awesome I must say! The power of the net... man what a beaut.....now I have one less unanswered hypothesis I can file away and let a new one take its place.

I really hope Britain never changes. What would all the tourists have to come home and talk about?

Sorry, no naked lady playing cards- toys, erasers, or candy, take your pick. I love the net, too. Every time I try to research one thing, I end up jamming knowledge about something entirely different into my already-crowded brain! The joys of technology.
